Heat gun or hair dryer for fixing old plastic trim?

My 2004 Civic's dashboard has this crack near the passenger vent that's been bugging me for a year. I watched a video where a guy used a heat gun to soften the plastic and push it back together, but I'm worried about melting it since it's old and brittle. A friend said just use a hair dryer on high, slower but safer, and a heat gun costs like $25 at Harbor Freight. Has anyone tried both methods on old car plastic and which one worked better for you?

Cheap brush cleaner trick saved me $30 on new dog brushes

Was cleaning out my grooming shop last week after a crazy Saturday and realized all my slicker brushes were caked with old hair and that sticky residue from coat sprays. Normally I'd just toss em and grab new ones from the supply store, but that's like $12 a pop. I had like 4 that were gross so that's almost $50 down the drain. Tried soaking them in hot water and vinegar overnight and then using a old toothbrush to scrub between the pins. Worked way better than I thought. Got like 95% of the gunk off. Anyone else got a weird way to clean brushes without buying the expensive brush cleaners from the pet stores?

Just read that most hobby paints have a shelf life of 2 years even if they look fine

I was browsing a paint chemistry forum last night and saw this stat that hobby acrylics and enamels start breaking down after 24 months on the shelf, even if they haven't been opened. That explains why my last batch of model tank paint came out all clumpy and weird even though it looked smooth in the bottle. Anyone else check their paint dates and find old stuff that ruined a project?

That $150 heat gun I bought for resin work was a total letdown

I bought a fancy heat gun online for getting bubbles out of epoxy resin, thinking it would save me time. Ended up using it twice before it started smoking on me, and the bubbles still popped up anyway. My buddy's $20 hair dryer from the thrift store actually works better for this whole process. Why do we keep falling for the expensive tool trap when the cheap stuff does the same job?

Had a weird realization at the flea market in Phoenix last month

Ngl, I was just looking for a cheap replacement blade for my scroll saw and ended up talking to this guy who restores old hand planes. He showed me how to sharpen a chisel using just a flat tile and some water, no fancy jig needed. I tried it when I got home and it actually works better than the $40 sharpening system I bought off Amazon. Anyone else got a weird thrift store find that totally changed their workshop game?

Turns out a bent paperclip works great for cleaning my sewing machine tension discs

Last week my machine kept making loops on the bottom of the stitch, so I took out the tension assembly and found a wad of lint stuck between the discs. I used a bent paperclip to gently scrape it out and now it sews like new. Has anyone else found random household items that fix their gear without buying specialty tools?

I hit 1,000 hours on my old sewing machine last week, didn't even know it had a counter

I was cleaning out my sewing room and noticed a tiny little counter on the back of my vintage Singer. It had rolled over to exactly 1,000 hours. I bought that machine at a yard sale for $35 about 12 years ago, and it just kept chugging along through quilts, Halloween costumes, and mending jeans. That number surprised me because I never thought of my hobby in terms of hours before, it was just something I did when I had time. It made me realize how much I actually use the thing without ever spending a dime on repairs, just oil and a new needle here and there. Has anyone else found a hidden counter on their tools or gear, and did it make you rethink how much you actually do your hobby?

My neighbor told me my pruning cuts were all wrong

He showed me how I was leaving stubs instead of cutting to the branch collar, and after fixing my technique on one maple the tree actually looks healthier this season. Has anyone else had a random neighbor give them a tip that totally changed their approach?
