Warning for anyone using that new bonding treatment from the supply shop on Main Street

I tried the Eluminex bonding treatment on a client last Tuesday and her hair started snapping off at the root after three days. Turns out I was leaving it on way too long because the bottle said 20 minutes but that was for virgin hair, not highlighted. Anyone else run into trouble with a product's directions being misleading like that?

That foiling hack everyone says is a gimmick? It actually saved me 20 minutes per client.

I was skeptical about the triangle section method for highlights. My mentor always said to stick with the classic weave, so I never bothered. Finally tried it on a busy Saturday after back to back bleach touch ups. I halved my sectioning time and still got even coverage on a full head of foils. Has anyone else given it a shot or am I late to the party?

Switched from a cheap box dye to a salon color for one client and the difference was night and day.

I used a $6 drugstore kit on my sister's roots last month and she ended up with orange streaks, then I did the same process with Redken at the shop on a different client and it came out perfect - has anyone else had a disaster switching between professional and drugstore color?

Tried a 10-minute face massage before my client's wedding trial and she nearly fell asleep

I've always rushed through pre-service scalp massages, just 2 or 3 minutes max. Last Saturday I took a full 10 minutes on this bride with tense shoulders and she literally dozed off in my chair. Has anyone else found that extra time on massage makes or breaks the whole appointment flow?

Back in 2019 a long-time client straight up said my shadow root looked like a stripe. Changed my whole approach to applying color right at the bowl instead of relying on post-brush blending. Anybody else get a critique that actually made them better?

Hit 500 clients this month and it made me rethink everything

I kept a tally since I started cosmetology school back in 2019, and last Thursday I hit 500 clients total. That number surprised me because I always felt like I was still new at this, but 500 faces later I finally see patterns I missed before. Like how most people book their first appointment after a bad breakup or a job interview coming up. It made me realize I'm not just doing hair, I'm helping people reset their whole mood. Does anyone else track their numbers or am I just weird about keeping count?

PSA: A client told me my brush cleaning was ruining her scalp

Had a regular last Tuesday, she's been coming to me for about a year. She finally spoke up and said the alcohol I was using to sanitize brushes between clients was drying out her scalp so bad she'd get flaky for days after. I never even thought about the residue transferring from the brush to her roots. Switched to a UV sanitizer instead. Anyone else had clients hold back complaints like that?

Went back to an old curling iron technique from 10 years ago and it actually worked better than my fancy new one

I have this expensive rotating hot air brush I bought last year and I use it all the time. But last week my sister asked me to do her hair for a wedding and I grabbed my old 1 inch curling iron from beauty school days. It's just a basic Conair no fancy features. I did that old twist and wrap thing where you wrap the hair around the barrel not clamp it. Her curls held for like 8 hours through dancing and humidity. My fancy brush gives me loose waves that fall flat in 2 hours. Made me wonder if all these new tools are just making things more complicated. Has anyone else found an old technique that works better than the newer stuff?

Finally fixed orange peel by changing my spray distance

I've been struggling with orange peel on my spray jobs for like 6 months straight. Tried different reducers, different pressure settings, even swapped to a new gun. Then my coworker watched me for 2 minutes and told me I was holding the gun 10 inches away instead of 6. Fixed it instantly. Has anyone else had a simple distance tweak fix something you were overcomplicating?

Tried a purple shampoo on my blonde client... got blue for 3 days

Had a regular come in last Tuesday. Said her brass was out of control. I grabbed a new purple shampoo from the supply closet. Mixed it in, left it on for 8 minutes like usual. When I rinsed it out, her hair was literally lavender-blue. Looked like she lost a fight with a Smurf. Learned that brand has way stronger pigment than my usual stuff. Now I test every new product on a strand first. Any of you ever had a color go rogue like that?

Started using a fine mist spray bottle instead of my old pump sprayer for highlights

For years I used a cheap pump sprayer that would dump water in random blobs and mess up my foils, but after I grabbed a $7 continuous mist bottle from the beauty supply last month, everything changed. The mist is so even now that my sections stay perfectly damp without any drips running down the back of the neck. My brand new hair dryer died mid-client on a Saturday

I had a full day booked last Saturday, 4 clients back to back. Got to the third one, a regular who always wants her long hair done quick, and my ion dryer just stopped blowing air. No spark, no noise, just dead. Had to borrow my coworker's old Parlux to finish and I felt like a total hack. Anyone else have a major tool fail on them at the worst possible time?

PSA: Heard a stylist say conditioner on roots is fine, and it messed with my head

I was waiting for my shift to start at the salon downtown last Tuesday, and I heard a newer stylist tell her client that putting conditioner on the roots is totally fine. Every instructor I had in school drilled into us to keep it off the scalp. Now I'm wondering if I've been overthinking this for the past 3 years. Has anyone here actually tested this on different hair types and seen a difference?

My aunt told me to stop using cheap brushes and I hated that she was right

I've been cosmetology school for about 8 months now and my aunt who's been doing hair for 20 years kept nagging me to throw out my $3 pack of brushes from the drugstore. Finally last week I bit the bullet and bought a single proper brush for $22 at the supply shop near my school. Used it on a balayage client and the color blended so much smoother I actually finished 20 minutes early. I mean maybe it's just me but I think the bristles just pick up product way better. Has anyone else noticed a huge difference switching from budget tools to better ones?

Am I the only one who had a perm go fully sideways on a Saturday afternoon?

I was working on a perm for a regular client in my chair at Shear Style in Portland last month. The timer on my phone died and I left the solution on for 8 extra minutes by accident. Her hair turned into this weird crispy cotton candy texture and I had to do a deep protein treatment and cut off 3 inches immediately. Has anyone else had a timer fail on them and how did you fix the damage?

Hit 500 client bookings last month and it made me wonder if quantity even matters anymore

So I finally reached 500 total client appointments in my chair, which felt like a big deal when I started tracking 3 years ago. But then I looked back and realized maybe a third of those were rushed haircuts or color fixes that I basically did for free just to get a name out there. On one hand, that number proves I can keep a steady stream of people coming in. On the other hand, would I have been better off focusing on selling higher-end treatments to fewer clients? Last month my coworker Jess brought in this Revlon hot air brush and I was SO skeptical. I've been doing hair for 8 years and I thought nothing could beat a round brush and blow dryer combo. Just learned why some haircolors fade faster than others - blew my mind

I was at a workshop in Portland last weekend and the instructor dropped a stat that really got me. She said red pigment molecules are actually the biggest ones out of all the color groups. So they can't penetrate the hair shaft as deep as brown or black tones do. That explains why my redheads always come back looking washed out after just 3 weeks. Three years ago I swore by the same 4 haircuts, last week I tried a razor cut for the first time

Ive been doing hair for like 12 years now and always stuck with shears for everything. Last month a client asked for a shaggy look and I panicked a little. Watched some videos online and finally grabbed a Feather razor from the supply store on Tuesday. Did the cut yesterday and honestly it was way easier than I thought. The texture came out nicer than when I try to layer with shears. Has anyone else switched tools after years of doing it one way?
