Vent: The difference a real vacuum made in my carpet after 5 years of cheap ones

Honestly, I've been using those $40 stick vacuums from the drugstore for years and just thought my carpet was supposed to look kind of flat and dingy. Last weekend I borrowed my neighbor's Miele canister vacuum and ran it over my living room rug - the amount of dirt and pet hair it pulled up was insane. I bet I've been walking on a layer of grime this whole time because I was too cheap to spend over $100. Has anyone else had that shock when you finally use a decent vacuum?

Wait, you're telling me there's actually carpet under all that stuff? I had the exact same wake-up call when I upgraded from a $50 upright to a used Kirby. The first pass on my living room carpet filled the entire canister with what looked like fine dust and clumps of hair. It took me three full vacuums over the same spots before the water ran clear on my carpet cleaner. Now I tell everyone to just bite the bullet and get something with actual suction power, even if it's used. Your neighbors probably think you're a clean person now but really you just had a cruddy vacuum.
