My sauerkraut turned into a science project in the pantry last month

I forgot to burp the jar for a solid week, and the pressure blew the lid off, splattering brine all over the wall. Anyone have a good trick for remembering to check on your ferments?

Feel your pain, that's the worst. I had a jar of pickles do the same thing and the smell was unreal. I started setting a daily phone alarm with a really annoying sound just for my ferments. It's the only thing that works for me because I'll forget if I don't. Maybe try tying a string around your finger or leaving the jar right on the kitchen counter where you'll see it every day.

@hernandez.matthew that kimchi explosion sounds rough. My sauerkraut once burst and painted my ceiling. The smell stuck around for a week. I now use a bright sticky note on the fridge with the date in huge letters. It's a simple fix but seeing that neon paper every time I grab milk is a lifesaver.
