Tried to 'freehand' a tile backsplash vs. using a laser level

My 'straight' line looked like a toddler drew it after two beers, but the laser level got it perfect in 10 minutes. Anyone got tips for cleaning up thinset from grout lines before it fully sets?

Oh man, my freehand lines look like a seismograph reading. A wet sponge works fast for cleaning thinset, just don't scrub too hard.

My old tile guy in Phoenix swore by a dry rag first, @the_jamie, saying a wet sponge just spreads the mess.

Feel your pain with those shaky lines. My first tile job looked like a toddler drew the grout. That sponge trick is a lifesaver for sure.
