Serious question, has anyone else had a simple tile job turn into a weekend-long nightmare?

I figured replacing a cracked bathroom floor tile would be a quick fix, but matching the grout color from 1998 took me three trips to the store and about 14 hours total. The new tile is slightly off-white and now the whole floor looks dirty. What's the best way to blend old grout without redoing everything?

Feel your pain, I once spent a whole Sunday trying to match grout and now my bathroom looks like a patchwork quilt. For blending, you can try a grout stain or a colorant, they sell it in little bottles. It's basically paint for your grout lines. You just clean the old grout really well and brush it on. It won't fix the tile being off, but it can make the lines all one color so the new spot hides better. It's still a finicky job but way less work than ripping everything out.

Yeah, the grout stain @charlie384 mentioned is a total lifesaver for this. I used a tiny artist's brush to get it right into the lines without smearing it all over the tile. Just make sure you really scrub the old grout first with a stiff brush and some cleaner, or the new color won't stick right. It's a pain but it does blend everything together.
