My $50 curtain rod install turned into a $200 drywall repair

I read a post about using toggle bolts for heavy curtains but thought I knew better. Ended up ripping the whole bracket out of the wall when I yanked the curtains open. Anybody else have a simple job snowball into something way more expensive?

My last curtain rod adventure ended with me using a command hook as a permanent fix (don't judge, it's been three years). The worst part was trying to explain to my wife that the hole in the wall was "structural" and definitely not because I yanked too hard. Now every time someone opens those curtains I hold my breath and pray to the drywall gods. I swear, half the stuff in my house is held together with spite and a little bit of luck.

Buddy of mine did the same thing with a towel rack. Told his girlfriend the tile was "load bearing" after he ripped a chunk out. Three years later she still closes the bathroom door real gentle like.
