Just realized my homemade deck stain was a total mess

I mixed a custom stain using leftover paint and linseed oil to save cash, but a friend who builds houses saw it and said 'that's gonna peel in a month, you didn't seal the wood first.' He was right, it all flaked off after two big rains. What's the right first step for an outdoor wood project like that?

Feel your pain, that's a classic weekend warrior mistake. Skipping the wood prep always comes back to bite you. Start with a good cleaner and brightener to open up the wood grain before you put anything on it.

Is sealing really that big a deal if you use a good oil base? My uncle never sealed his fence and it held up for years. Maybe the mix was just wrong.

Man, that's rough. I've been there with way more than deck stain (a whole furniture refinishing project comes to mind). It's that sinking feeling when you realize you skipped a step and it all went sideways. Cole is spot on though - a good cleaner and brightener really does make the difference. It opens up the pores in the wood so whatever you put on next actually bonds instead of just sitting on top. Plus it strips any old stuff or grime that would block it. Lesson learned the hard way, but now you know the real first step for next time.
