Vent: My $200 bathroom vanity install turned into a $600 plumbing nightmare

I tried to replace my old vanity last weekend, thinking it was a simple swap. I didn't realize the shutoff valves were original to the house and completely seized. Forcing one open snapped the pipe inside the wall. Had to call an emergency plumber on a Sunday, which was $400 just for the visit and patch. The whole thing took 3 hours and I'm out the cost of the new vanity too. Anyone got tips for checking old valves before you start?

Ouch, that's a classic homeowner horror story.

My buddy just had his water heater go out on Christmas Eve last year... that's the kind of timing that makes you wonder if houses have some kind of dark sense of humor. It's funny how we spend all this time trying to get everything perfect with the paint colors and furniture, but the real stuff that keeps the place standing is totally invisible until it fails. The roof, the foundation, the pipes in the walls... you never think about them until they're leaking or cracking. Feels like life is just a series of expensive surprises hidden behind the drywall.

Been there myself, and it never gets easier. The worst part is how these problems always show up at the worst possible time. You can plan and save, but something always finds a way to break. It really makes you appreciate the quiet weeks when nothing goes wrong. Hope your situation gets sorted without too much more trouble.
