My bathroom tile job in my first house taught me to always check the subfloor

I was putting down new 12x24 inch ceramic tiles in my old bathroom in Columbus. The floor felt solid when I walked on it, so I just went ahead and started setting tiles. About two days later, I heard a loud crack and found three tiles had broken right over a joist. I pulled them up and saw the subfloor had a soft spot I missed. It cost me another $150 in materials and a full weekend to fix it right. Has anyone else had a subfloor surprise ruin their tile work?

You didn't even check under the floor first?

Oh man, @angela40 is right, you gotta check. I'd be tapping every square inch with a hammer after hearing that crack.

Bring a magnet too though, sometimes the crack is from a nail popping and you'll miss it tapping.
