My basement drywall job flooded the laundry room last Tuesday
I was hanging the last sheet when my drill slipped and I punched a hole right into the main water line behind the wall. About 50 gallons poured out before I found the shutoff in the crawl space. Now I have a huge patch to fix in the copper pipe and a soaked floor. Has anyone patched a 1/2 inch pipe without having to solder a whole new section?

Just solder it right, a patch is asking for trouble later. That copper needs a proper fix, not a quick band-aid.

Nail it on the first go. A patch is just kicking the can. Get the heat right and flow the solder clean. Done once, done for good.

But @richardh44, is it really that big a deal?
