Hot take: My dad said 'a bad paint job is just a good first coat' after I ruined a door

I was trying to repaint my front door in Portland last weekend and it got all drippy and streaky. I was ready to strip it and start over, which felt like a huge waste. My dad called and I told him, and he just said that line about it being a good first coat. He meant I should just sand it smooth and do a second coat instead of freaking out. It hit different because I was about to make a 2 hour job into a 6 hour nightmare. Has anyone else saved a project by just doing a proper second layer instead of starting from zero?

My mom's whole cooking philosophy is that most mistakes just need another layer of cheese or sauce to fix them.

Remember that with drywall mud.
