Filling nail holes turned into a spackle disaster
I put too much spackle in the holes and it cracked when it dried. I figured out that using a few thin layers gives a smooth finish. What's your fix for this?

My friend Chris tried to fill a dozen nail holes in his hallway all at once. He used way too much spackle and it shrank into these weird little craters. He ended up scraping it all out with a butter knife, which messed up the paint. Now he does one hole at a time with just a smear on the edge of a credit card. It dries smooth and he barely needs to sand it.

Tell Chris to use a putty knife next time, it's way better than a credit card. A small one gives you control without digging into the paint like @blake_williams said happened. The metal edge spreads it thin so it dries flat.
