The difference in my work after I finally learned about layer masks in Photoshop

For the first year I was just using the eraser tool on everything, which was a total mess if I needed to go back and fix something. Then I watched a tutorial from a guy named Aaron Blaise and spent a whole weekend practicing just on masks. My latest piece, a portrait of my dog, went from taking me like 15 hours to maybe 6, and the edges look so much cleaner. Anyone else have a specific tool or technique that suddenly clicked and saved you a ton of time?

The eraser tool is a war crime.

Remember that time I tried to fix a tiny smudge and erased a whole chunk of the drawing... had to start the layer over from scratch.
