Someone told me my digital art looked too clean and it clicked
I posted a fantasy landscape here a few months back and a comment said, 'Looks like a video game asset, needs some grit.' They were right. I was so focused on perfect lines and smooth textures that everything felt fake. I started adding custom brush strokes for dirt and subtle color shifts in the sky, and it changed the whole feel. Anyone else get stuck making things look too polished and have tips for adding more life?

Looks like a video game asset" is such a specific burn. I can't believe that one comment made it all click.

Honestly that "video game asset" comment would have made me double down. Some of us LIKE that clean look. My favorite digital artists make these perfect, smooth worlds that feel like a dream. That's a style too, not a mistake. Adding grit is one way to go, but it's not the only way to make art feel alive.

But what if the "clean" look IS the grit? Like, that perfect smoothness can feel so weird and lonely it becomes its own kind of roughness.
