Saw a digital painting demo at Comic-Con San Diego that split my brain in half

This artist at booth 2149 showed a piece where he used ONLY hard round brushes for the entire painting, no blending at all. I've been using soft brushes and smudge tools for 3 years now, thinking that's the 'right' way to get smooth renders. But his work looked clean and sharp while mine always feels muddy. So which side are you on, hard edge only or blending tools are needed for realism?

Booth 2149 is pretty deep in that hall though...

Wait, are you me? I had the exact same mindblow moment a few months back when I watched a speedpaint from some guy who only used a default round brush. I'm sitting there slathering on soft brushes and smudging everything and his stuff just pops way more than mine ever did.
