Our city's annual art fair completely sidelined screen-based art this year
I just went to the art fair downtown, and it's frustrating. All the paintings and sculptures were front and center, but the art made on computers was stuck in a back room with bad lighting. I talked to one artist who creates amazing visuals with code, and she said people barely looked at her work. The judges seemed to just care about traditional mediums. It feels like our community is missing out on cool new art forms. Why can't they give artists who work with tech a proper spot?

Did they really put digital art in a BACK ROOM?

Maybe they're treating it like a server room, which sounds silly but hear me out. Digital art isn't a physical object taking up wall space, so maybe they see the screen as just the hardware, like a projector. The "art" part is the file, the code, the light, which doesn't care about fancy molding or good sight lines. Putting it in a back room accidentally makes a point about how we still don't know where this kind of work really lives. It's a weird kind of honesty, even if it feels like a slap in the face.

Honestly calling it a "server room" is giving them too much credit. Tbh it just sounds like they think anything with a power cord isn't real art. So much for the fair being about new ideas.
