Met a guy at a gallery in Portland who had a wild take on digital art

He said, 'If you're not making your own brushes, you're just coloring inside someone else's lines.' I mean, idk, maybe it's just me but I'd never even thought about that. Has anyone here made their own custom brushes for Procreate or Photoshop?

That Portland guy has a point though. I spent a weekend making a brush from a scan of my concrete driveway and it changed my whole texture game. Using only default tools is like cooking with nothing but pre-made sauce, you never learn what the real ingredients do. It's not gatekeeping, it's about understanding the craft on a deeper level. The moment you tweak that first setting to get the exact mark you want, you stop just using the app and start actually making things with it.

Seems a bit extra to gatekeep brushes like that.
