Contrary to my art group's view, I don't think every piece needs a public showcase.

They say sharing everything helps growth, but I feel some art loses its value when shown to everyone. What's your take on keeping work private sometimes?

But don't you think keeping art hidden cuts off chances to learn? When you share, you hear what works and what doesn't, which pushes your skills forward. If you always keep pieces private, you might miss out on feedback that turns good art into great art. Your group is right that putting work out there connects you with ideas you'd never find alone. Holding back everything can actually slow down your growth more than it protects your art.

My uncle used to carve these amazing wooden birds but refused to show anyone until he finished a whole flock. By the time he finally did, his hands were too shaky from arthritis to keep going. We only ever saw the last few pieces.

Look at how many artists got ruined by listening to the wrong crowd. A painter I know kept changing her style based on every online comment and lost what made her work special. Sometimes the feedback is just noise. Not every piece needs to be a lesson for public consumption. Keeping some things close lets you develop a voice without a committee in your head. It's not about stopping growth, it's about controlling the input.
