Vent: Tried two different payroll services for my small shop and one was a total headache
I run a small auto repair place in Sterling Heights with five employees. For the first two years, I used a big national payroll company my accountant suggested. It cost about $75 a month but I was always on the phone fixing mistakes with tax filings. Last quarter, I switched to a local Michigan-based service that specializes in small businesses. It's only $50 a month and they handle all the state paperwork automatically. The difference is night and day, I haven't had a single issue since the switch. Has anyone else found a local provider that just works better for Detroit area rules?

Wait, is that $75 per month or per pay period? Most national services I've seen charge per pay run, so the monthly cost can jump if you pay weekly. That hidden fee structure is a huge part of the headache. Glad you found a local flat-rate option that actually works.

Oh man, the per pay period thing is such a classic move. It's like they hope you don't do the math until you're already locked in. My old provider pulled that, and my bill was basically a surprise every single month. Finding a flat rate feels like you finally beat the system.

Ha god yeah that's so true. My last provider had this whole "per pay period" thing where they'd charge like $40 but it turned out they ran payroll every week, so I was paying $160 a month without realizing it. I literally felt like a genius when I finally found a flat rate and my bill stopped being a guessing game. Makes you wonder if they design those pricing charts to look like an optical illusion on purpose or if they just assume we're all bad at math (which, fair, I am).
