Getting a simple sign permit in Royal Oak took me three months

I mean, I just wanted to put up a new awning for my small shop on Main Street, and the city planning office kept sending me back for tiny changes. It was like a checklist that never ended, and they took two weeks to reply to each email. I finally got the approval last week after 12 full weeks of back and forth. Has anyone else dealt with this kind of delay around here, or is it just me?

My buddy runs that little bike repair place over on Washington. He tried to get a permit to paint his door a brighter color last year. The whole thing dragged on for months over the dumbest stuff, like the exact shade of blue on some form. He said it felt like they were just making up new rules every time he called. It completely killed his plan to have it done for the summer season. The whole process is just broken.
