My dad's 5 minute comment about my savings made me freeze up

I was over at my parent's house last weekend and my dad asked how much I had saved for a house. I told him about $4k and he just got real quiet and said 'you're 28, I had 20k at your age'. It hit different because he never talks money like that. Now I'm second guessing every little purchase I make, like is it even worth grabbing coffee or should I just eat rice and beans for a year? Has anyone else had a family member say something that made you totally rethink your spending habits?

A buddy of mine had this exact thing happen with his mom. She found out he was putting money into a fun savings account for a trip to Japan and told him he was wasting his future. He ended up cancelling the trip and just put the money into his regular savings. It took him over a year to realize he was miserable because he stopped doing anything he liked, and the extra savings didn't make him any happier. He says now he wishes he'd just taken the trip and kept his normal spending in check instead of cutting everything out.

Damn, that actually changed my mind. I used to side with the mom.
