After years of saying no, I'm considering fostering a cat

I worried about the commitment (and the mess, let's be real), but helping an animal feels right, so what are the cons I'm missing?

Wait, they hide for weeks? I pictured a shy cat under the bed for a day or two, but weeks? You mean you'd be leaving out food and water for an animal you might never actually see? I'd be constantly worried, checking every closet and cupboard, wondering if it got out somehow. That sounds so stressful, like having a ghost in your house that you're responsible for.

Seriously, the hardest part is giving them back after.

Honestly, the emotional hit when they leave is real, but in my experience, the bigger surprises are vet bills for stuff like sudden infections or dental issues. You might get a cat that hides for weeks or one that scratches up your furniture overnight. Cleaning litter boxes is one thing, but some have accidents outside the box that can stain carpets. Your mileage may vary, but be ready for random sleepless nights if they're anxious or playful when you're trying to sleep. Take that with a grain of salt, but it's good to go in with eyes open.
