Tried the fancy salt trick for my dishwasher and got worse results

I saw a post saying to put coarse sea salt in your dishwasher to help with hard water spots. Figured I'd give it a shot since my glasses were looking cloudy after 3 months of use. Dumped about a tablespoon in the bottom before a load and ran it. Ended up with a gritty film on every single dish and had to rewash everything twice. My dishwasher manual says nothing about salt so I learned my lesson about internet hacks. Has anyone else tried something like this and just made a bigger mess?

Didn't you need to put that salt in a special compartment though?

Oh man, absolutely! That little salt compartment thing tripped me up the first time too. I actually dumped a whole cup of salt into the main tank before realizing my mistake and had to basically drain everything and start over. It was a mess, but once I figured out which exact slot it goes in, the thing worked like a charm for the rest of the winter.
