Finally fixed my own dryer after the repair guy quoted $250 in Austin
The guy from the shop said the drum wasn't turning because of a bad motor, wanted 250 bucks plus labor. I watched a 10 minute video instead, found a broken belt for 12 dollars at Grainger. Took me maybe 45 minutes with just a screwdriver and some patience. Has anyone else had a repair person try to upsell them on something way more expensive than the real fix?

That $250 probably covered the diagnostic time and experience you don't have yet.

@jakegarcia you're not wrong that diagnostics take time and experience, but that doesn't mean every shop is justified charging $250 for a simple check. How do you tell the difference between a shop that's honestly billing for their time and one that's just padding the bill so you don't come back? I've had places charge me a ton for a "diagnostic" that turned out to be a loose wire they found in ten minutes. Does the customer ever get a breakdown of what that diagnostic actually involved?
