My local bank branch tried to charge me a $35 fee to cash my own check

I went in with a payroll check from my job, and the teller said I needed to have an account there or pay a fee. I've banked with them for 12 years, but at a different branch 20 miles away. The manager got involved and said the policy was 'for security' and wouldn't budge. I had to drive all the way home to get my debit card to prove it. Has anyone else had a bank pull this kind of nonsense?

That's ridiculous they made you drive home. @jones.mason mentioned a news story about this, was it about banks doing this on purpose to push people into opening new accounts? What was the bank's reason for not just looking up your existing account with your ID? Their computer system should show you're a customer even at another branch.
