Had to choose between a refund or a replacement for a $300 camping tent

About 3 years ago I bought a tent from a big outdoor store and the zipper split on the second trip. I took it back expecting a quick swap but the customer service guy told me I could either get a full refund or a replacement but not both because of their policy. I went with the replacement because I needed a tent for next weekend and didn't want to shop around again. The replacement lasted maybe one season before the poles started bending in normal wind. Now I'm stuck wondering if I should have just taken the cash and bought something else entirely. Has anyone else had better luck pushing for a store credit instead of those two options?

Three years later and that refund probably could've bought you a better tent on sale.

Man, that's a good point. Inflation alone probably would've made that refund worth a lot less than the tent you actually wanted.
