Am I the only one who thinks that 'the customer is always right' is a stupid rule?

I had this older guy at a hardware store last month. I was trying to return a drill bit that I bought wrong size by accident. He just looked at me and said, 'no returns on bits, store policy.' I told him I didn't even use it, just picked the wrong one. He said 'should have read the package.' I was so frustrated but later I realized he was just following a dumb rule. But honestly, I've had customers scream at me for dumb stuff too. So I get both sides. Has anyone else dealt with a return policy that makes no sense?

That drill bit thing is just plain frustrating. Hardware store returns can be the worst sometimes.

Did they at least give you store credit or just a flat no?
