Pro tip: I stopped pushing keratin treatments on every client after a bad week in March.

I had three clients in a row come back with major breakage because their hair just couldn't handle the process, even with my usual test strand. It made me rethink my whole approach. Has anyone else moved away from a 'one size fits all' service menu?

That "one size fits all" service menu is a real trap. I used to have a standard smoothing treatment I'd suggest to almost everyone. Now I start with a long consultation, almost like a hair doctor. I ask about home water quality, their exact heat tool habits, even what medications they're on. A client on a new acne pill last month had hair that reacted totally wrong to a color service. Saved us both a disaster. It takes more time upfront but builds way better trust.

Yeah, the consultation is everything now. I started doing a quick strand test on everyone before any chemical service, no matter what they say they use at home. Found out one client's well water was basically bleach. That extra five minutes saves a huge correction later. Clients see you actually care about their hair's health.
