Debate: Should we charge for consultations or keep them free?

I was at a salon networking event in Austin last week and overheard two stylists going back and forth. One said she charges $25 for any consultation over 15 minutes because her time is valuable. The other argued that free consults bring in more bookings and build trust. I see both sides but wonder if charging weeds out tire-kickers or scares away potential clients. What do you all do at your chairs?

Did I charge my therapist for the hour I spent overthinking this?

Pretty sure the rule is you can only bill them if you're actively in the room thinking out loud about it. That overthinking time at home just counts as free overtime for your brain. You'd probably have to fill out a special form and get pre-approved for it anyway. Honestly, your therapist should be the one charging you extra for the mental real estate you're borrowing during off hours.
