Chatted with a client who's been coming to me for 15 years about her first perm
She said her stylist back then used to wrap the rods in old grocery bags instead of end papers... made me realize how much we take for granted now. Anyone else hear a 'back in my day' story that just stuck with you?

Grocery bags? For real? That's wild. I can't even picture how that would work without being a total mess. The chemicals must have just soaked right through. It really does make you appreciate the proper tools we have now. That's a story she'll probably tell forever.

My friend's aunt told us about getting a perm in the 70s where they used actual coat hangers, the wire kind, to make some of the bigger curls. Can you imagine? @jamiegreen, it makes the grocery bag thing sound almost normal. She said they had to be super careful not to poke anyone, and the whole thing took hours. It's crazy what people put up with before the right stuff was invented.

Super careful not to poke anyone" - yeah, I'd hope so, coat hangers and chemical perm solution sounds like a nightmare combo. Though I'm pretty sure that wasn't exactly a mainstream salon thing, more like a desperate DIY move your aunt's friend came up with. Still gives me the creeps thinking about it.
