Appreciation post: I thought the 'cold water only' hair wash thing was just a weird trend
For months, I saw people online saying you should only rinse conditioner with cold water. I figured it was just another fad, like those weird hair masks. Then my friend, a stylist in Cincinnati, told me to try it for two weeks straight. I did, and my normally frizzy hair got way smoother and shinier. She said the cold water helps close the cuticle and lock in moisture, and I guess she was right. Has anyone else had a simple trick like that actually work for them?

Wait, isn't it just the final rinse that should be cold? I always heard you still wash with warm water to clean your scalp properly. The cold part at the end is what seals everything.

You know, @susan752, I actually wash with cool water from the start... warm water can really dry out your scalp and make your hair produce more oil. It feels better to use warm, but it's not as good for your hair health. The cold rinse at the end is for shine, but starting cool helps keep your scalp balanced. It made a big difference for me when I switched.

Remember my friend who had super oily hair no matter what she tried? She started doing exactly what @wright.dakota said, washing with cool water from the get-go. She said it felt weird for a week, but her scalp totally calmed down. She used to need dry shampoo by noon, now she can go two days without washing. The cold final rinse still makes her ends shiny, but the cool wash changed everything for her hair.
