The town hall survey I almost skipped changed how I write memos

I nearly deleted the 15-minute employee survey after last month's town hall, but one open-ended question about internal updates caught me. A junior analyst said our project recaps read like press releases, so I tried bullet points and a direct ask for feedback in my next one, and my manager actually replied with a question for once. Has anyone else gotten a real reaction after simplifying their corporate messaging?

It took me three tries and a very blunt coworker to admit my weekly status emails were basically word soup. Once I stripped out all the corporate padding and just wrote what I finished, what I was stuck on, and what I needed, people actually started responding with useful stuff. My boss used to read them in meetings and now he just says "got it" which is a win in my book. I also added a one line at the bottom asking if anyone saw a problem with my plan, and surprise, a quiet guy on the team finally spoke up. It's wild how we all think formal equals professional when simple equals clear. Your mileage may vary, but I'm never going back to the old style.
