The CEO's one word edit that killed my 40 page annual report

I spent 6 weeks on our annual report, about 40 pages of charts and case studies and all that. Felt pretty good about it. Then the CEO sent back his edits and he had only changed one word in the whole doc. He swapped 'we believe' with 'we know' in the intro paragraph. That was it. At first I was annoyed, like this guy just took a red pen to one thing and sent it back. But then I kept reading and it hit me how much stronger the whole message landed. Every section after that intro suddenly read with more confidence. My whole draft was built on passive, wishy-washy language. That single word switch made me go back and audit every single headline and callout. I found about 15 other spots where I was hedging. Now I write the first draft in the active voice and only soften things when legal forces me. Has anyone else had a tiny edit from a leader totally reframe how you approach a big deliverable?

Got the same thing once on a client deck. My boss crossed out "we suggest" and wrote "we recommend" and suddenly I realized I was asking for permission instead of giving them a reason to move. Made me strip out every "might" and "could" from the whole thing and the energy shifted completely.
