The CEO who said 'kill the press release' was right, but not for the reason he gave

Our CEO told me last March to stop sending press releases for product launches and just post updates on LinkedIn. I fought it for two months, watched our coverage drop 40 percent, then tried his way and saw more real engagement in a week than we got all quarter. Has anyone else had a leader kill a standard practice and it actually worked, or was it just luck on our side?

The part about seeing "more real engagement in a week than we got all quarter" really stuck with me. I read a piece last month from a PR guy who said most press releases get read by maybe 5 people before hitting the trash pile. We did something similar with our monthly email newsletter. Killed it, moved everything to a simple Slack channel for clients. Numbers went up fast. But I also think you got lucky in one way, your CEO probably had a feel for where your actual audience hangs out. Sometimes the old way is just habit, not strategy.
