That 10 minute chat with our COO about my newsletter

I was griping about low open rates and she just said 'stop writing for your boss, write for the person who actually reads it.' Hit me hard because I'd been cramming exec priorities into every issue instead of thinking about what the floor staff cares about. Anybody else had a quick convo that totally shifted how you approach your internal comms?

Nah but hold up, if you water down everything for the lowest common denominator you end up with a newsletter that says nothing. @kellyg14's buddy's CEO was wrong - the people paid by the hour still need to understand how the company's doing so they feel part of it, not just get baby pics.

A buddy of mine runs comms for a mid-size company and was in the same boat. He went to his CEO for advice and the CEO basically said, "Your newsletter is for the person getting paid by the hour, not the person paying the hour." So he swapped out all the big picture jargon for stuff like a photo of someone's new grandkid and a shoutout to the warehouse crew that hit a safety record. He said open rates jumped from like 15% to 45% over a few months. Crazy what happens when you remember your actual audience.
