Quarterly earnings call script backfired on us in a town hall

We spent three weeks building a polished earnings call script for our internal town hall last month in Austin. It sounded great on paper, but employees started tuning out by slide six and we got only two questions during the whole Q&A. Someone finally asked why we were talking like investors instead of like teammates, and the room went quiet. We scrapped the script mid-meeting and just talked through the numbers with no jargon, and suddenly people engaged. My takeaway is that internal comms and external comms need totally different voices, even for the same data. Has anyone else had a scripted approach fail when you tried it inside your own company?
