My old boss said 'never email when you're angry' and I ignored her last week

I sent a pretty harsh email to our VP about a comms project that got derailed by legal and now I'm dealing with the fallout. She literally told me to walk away first but I thought I could handle it professionally. Has anyone else had a moment where you wished you listened to that piece of advice?

Wait, didn't you used to think sending angry emails was just being "honest" or "standing your ground"? I used to be that person too, swore by it. But after one late night rant got forwarded to the whole department, I finally got it. The problem isn't what you say, it's how you say it when you're mad. Your boss wasn't telling you to hide your feelings, she was telling you to give yourself a fighting chance to be heard. Trust me, nobody ever wins by hitting send when they're hot.
