Watch out for backlash on used Haas machines, check the thrust bearings first

I picked up a used VF-2 from an auction in Ohio last month and the Y axis was fine on rapids but started thumping during a contour pass. Tried tramming the head, adjusting gibs, even swapped the coupling. Turns out the thrust bearing at the Y axis ballscrew was shot, 0.004 inch of play that only showed under load. Cost me 3 days of downtime and a $480 bearing kit to figure out. If you buy used, grab a dial indicator and push on the table with a pry bar before you even power it up. Anyone else get burned by hidden backlash on a used machine, or do you have a better way to test it on the floor?
