Warning: I quit using a feeler gauge to tram my vise and my parts got better
For 6 years I trammed every vise with a feeler gauge and a dead blow, and I defended it every time a young guy told me an indicator was faster. Two months ago my surface finish on a batch of 4140 plates kept drifting .002 out of flat, so I finally clamped a dial indicator on the spindle and swept the vise jaws instead. Turns out I was chasing my own feel at .0015 the whole time, and the indicator found a burr under the back jaw that no feeler gauge would ever catch. Now I sweep it in about 40 seconds before every setup, and I've stopped blaming the machine for stuff I did at the vise. Anyone here still running the feeler gauge, or did you all switch over years ago and never look back?
