Warning: A setup guy told me my feeds and speeds were garbage and I owe him for it
He watched me run a 1/2 inch end mill at 3000 rpm in 6061 and just said 'you're burning up your tooling for nothing.' I bumped it to 6000 rpm with a lighter chip load and my insert life went from about 2 weeks to 5 on the same parts. What's the one piece of criticism that actually made you change your numbers?
What was your chip load before and after? Going from 3000 to 6000 is a big jump and if you were running too light a chip load at the lower speed, that's what was killing your inserts, not the rpm itself. Rubbing instead of cutting builds heat fast. Curious if you kept the same feed per tooth when you made that change or if you actually dialed it in.
