Used to just eyeball my offsets until I scrapped a $300 part on a prototype run last Tuesday

That $300 mistake is just the universe charging you tuition for a lesson most of us learn the hard way. @olivia_morgan8 is dead right about systems being the only way to stop our overconfidence from costing us. It's funny how we'll trust our gut on something that takes two seconds to verify, then act surprised when it bites us.

Oh man, that hurts just to read! I learned this lesson the hard way too after I messed up a batch of brackets because I was too confident in my tape measure skills. What finally worked for me was setting up a simple checklist on a dry erase board right next to my work station. Before I hit "go" on any cut, I force myself to stop and verify the offset measurement against the actual part I'm copying. It only takes like 30 seconds but it's saved me so much money and frustration since I started doing it. Also I take a photo of the original part with a ruler next to it before I even touch anything, just in case I need to double check later.
