Update: My dad's old lathe is causing tension with my wife
My dad passed down his manual lathe, and I've been tuning it up in the garage. My wife calls it a loud dust collector that bothers the block. I feel it's a neat way to bond with my kids and show them real metal shaping. Just yesterday, my boy helped me oil the leadscrew, and he was glued to it. She counters that CNC pays the bills and this relic is just in the way. So, what do you guys say? Keep it for family lessons or ditch it to keep peace at home?

Your wife calling it a loud dust collector is fair, but you can fix that. Get a good shop vac hooked up to it right away, cuts dust by like 80%. I built a simple sound booth with moving blankets around my saw, neighbors stopped complaining. Keep the lathe for your boy, just be smart about when you run it.

Totally agree on the shop vac, but don't skip the filter upgrade too. I lined my shed with old carpet scraps and it cut the noise WAY down. For the lathe, maybe run it after school but before dinner, so it's not too late. My kid loves turning pens, and with good dust control, my wife doesn't mind. It's all about finding that balance, you know? Once you get the setup right, it becomes a non-issue.

Maybe try a cheap sound blanket and run it on weekend afternoons only, that worked for me.
