Took me 4 years to realize I was tramming wrong on the Bridgeport

Back in 2017 I was running a job at a shop in Toledo and kept getting chatter on my finish passes. I blamed the inserts, the holder, even the coolant mix. One day the old timer next to me, Gary, watched me tram the head and just laughed. He showed me I was tightening the 4 bolts in a circle instead of opposite pairs. The head was cocked maybe 2 thou and I'd been fighting it for years across 3 different shops. Has anyone else had a basic setup habit that just clicked one day after years of blaming everything else?
