Pro tip: bumped my feed and speed 15 percent on 6061 and the finish got better, not worse
I run a Haas VF-2 at a small shop in Akron and always played it safe on aluminum, slow feeds, light cuts, because that is what the old handbook in the office says. Tuesday I had a rush job, 40 brackets, and I was behind, so I pushed the spindle to 7500 rpm and the feed up to 60 ipm just to get through it faster. The chips came off in nice fat curls and the surface finish looked better than my usual slow pass, almost mirror smooth on the side walls. I think the slow passes were letting the tool rub and work harden the surface. Anybody else run into a cutter that cuts cleaner when you stop babying it?
