Old timer's setup trick saved my aluminum job

Guy named Rick at a shop outside Cleveland watched me struggle with chatter on 6061, then he walks over and says 'slow your spindle, speed your feed, let the chip thin out'. Tried it on my next part and the finish came out glassy, first try. Has anyone else gotten advice that seemed backwards but actually worked?
