My wife asked me why I always check the coolant level before the first part of a run, and I said 'because that's how I was taught', but then she asked 'but why does that matter more than checking the vise pressure?'

That simple question from her last night made me realize I've been blindly following a routine for 8 years without truly understanding the failure chain, so has anyone else had a basic shop practice they finally questioned and it changed their setup?

Jason's buddy with the torque wrench thing is spot on. We get these habits drilled into us and never ask what actually breaks first. Makes you wonder what else we're doing on autopilot for no real reason.

My buddy did that with his torque wrench ritual.

Yeah my dad was the same way with oil changes. Every 3,000 miles like clockwork, full synthetic, torque wrench on the drain plug every single time. Then I actually looked it up and modern oil is good for like 5,000 or even 7,500 miles in most cars. He'd been doing that extra work and spending extra money for nothing for probably 20 years. It's wild how many of these little rituals we pick up from someone and just never question. I bet half the stuff people do around their house or their cars is just because grandpa said so.
