Dropped $150 on a touch probe for my mill and it paid off in 2 days
I bought a basic renishaw style probe off ebay for setting tools and checking parts, thinking it might be a waste. First job had 24 parts with tight bores and it saved me about 4 hours of manual indicating and checking. Has anyone else tried a budget probe setup and had it work out or totally fail?

Oh man, that's exactly the kind of thing that makes you wonder why you didn't do it sooner. I've noticed this pattern where people overthink the cheap stuff and end up wasting way more time and money on the "proper" way. Like with cooking, I spent years fussing with a fancy knife set when a $20 sharp one from the hardware store does 90% of the same work if you just take care of it. Same with tools, same with car repairs, same with pretty much everything. The difference between "good enough" and "perfect" is usually just a few percent of the result but a huge chunk of the cost. Your probe story is just another example of that same old pattern in real life.

Respectfully, @reese_patel, good enough rarely stays good enough for long.
