Had to pick between a rusty Civic and a high-mile Corolla last weekend

Went with the Civic because it had way less rust underneath, even though the paint was shot. Turned out the timing belt was 10k overdue so that was a $600 surprise. Anyone else get burned by skipping a basic maintenance check on a beater?

Grabbed a cheap multimeter and checked everything electrical before buying mine, saved me from a fried alternator that looked fine.
