Warning: I just found out how many of those tiny screws are in a single Canon 5D mirror box

I was cleaning out a parts bin and counted 27 separate screws just for the mirror assembly and shutter mechanism. Found the breakdown in a 2008 service manual I downloaded from a forum archive. Has anyone else had to deal with this specific model's disassembly?

Counted 27? That's actually on the low end for that camera. The full top cover and chassis teardown pushes it way past 50 easy. Those old service manuals are gold, but the screw counts always sneak up on you.

Screw counts always sneak up on you" is the perfect way to describe most repair jobs. You start thinking it's just a few pieces, then you're looking at a table covered in parts. It's a good lesson in never trusting your first guess.

Totally agree with @parkerk56 on this one. 27 screws is actually kind of tame for the 5D mirror box. Once you start pulling the top cover and chassis off, you will easily break 50 screws and it becomes a real puzzle. I have been through that full teardown twice now and it always feels like way more than you expect. The worst part is keeping track of which screw goes where because they look identical but are slightly different lengths. Did you have to label everything or just wing it?
